İkinci olarak, Albert Borgmann’ın Heidegger’in fikirlerinden ilham alarak ürettiği “odaklı pratikler” kavramını betimleyerek onun görüşlerine gelen tepkilerden bazılarını ele alarak inceliyorum. Yazının son kısmında, çağdaş teknolojinin çoğulculuk, değişkenlik ve geçişkenlik kavramları üzerinden oluşan yeni felsefi kimliğine ilişkin bazı görüngübilimsel düşünceler sunuyorum.
Despite its relatively recent identity as a sub-field, philosophy of technology is obviously situated in a web of significant conceptual relationships with the more entrenched areas of philosophy such as ontology, epistemology, political philosophy, ethics and aesthetics. Furthermore, one can reasonably claim that an in-depth scrutiny on some of the fundamental issues of this branch of philosophy would incontrovertibly bring to bear the insights and approaches of certain disciplines like sociology, anthropology, psychology, and political sciences. In this paper, I introduce the subject matter broadly and in light of some current social events and then mainly scrutinize two interesting and controversial debates. The first of these is about the “character” or “impetus” of technology as a social phenomenon. In that context, I explicate and discuss the anthropological-philosophical views of Jacques Ellul, Hans Jonas and Arnold Gehlen who made remarkable contributions to the pertinent literature in the 20th century. Secondly, I broadly describe Albert Borgmann’s Heidegger-inspired idea of “focused practices” and display some of the prominent responses to that view. In the last part of the paper, I provide my thoughts with regard to the notions of pluralism, dynamism and fluidity in association with contemporary technology.

The main claim of the famous paper “The Extended Mind”, written by Clark and Chalmers (CC), is that the mind could literally extend into the external world. Among the many opponents of this claim, Robert Rupert has raised two main objections against it. The first, depending on the acceptance or denial of the possible 4th feature the hypothesis of extended cognition (HEC) is either insignificant or implausible and the second, external cognitive states are so immensely different from internal ones that they should be counted as distinct. In this paper, I will not only answer Rupert’s criticisms through system-respond and differences in R-properties, but I will, in the end, also respond to the criticisms on extended mind, which are based on the observation that it is not as groundbreaking as it first appeared to be, and claim that even if that is the case, it doesn’t posit a problem to its significance.

On the Concept of Nothing in Heidegger

There ‘is’ not only the external world, but also thinkable things. In this case, something that is not determined by Being and whose path has not passed through Being is unthinkable. Among the thinkable things, only Nothing cannot be attributed by being, for as soon as existence is attributed to it, it will no longer be Nothing. That is why Heidegger uses the phrase of ‘to not’ for Nothing. Yet, this does not mean that Nothing should be excluded from the Being investigation. Rather, it provides an important perspective to investigate the meaning of Being, exactly because it has not had ‘existence’. By ‘stripping beings from their existence’, Heidegger investigates the meaning of Being in a way that has not been done before, because he thinks that when we say that ‘there are beings’, it is ‘there are’ statement which should be emphasized on. So, we will focus on Nothing, which is one of the most important concepts that Heidegger has applied in his investigation. Heidegger, in order to investigate the meaning of Being, takes Nothing in such a way that we can doubt whether this Nothing will eventually remain as Nothing and we can ask: Does Nothing, taken as a phenomenon, signify an exactly empty and even unthinkable Nothingness, or, is it a ‘thing’ that can somehow be captured? If Nothing can be experienced somehow, can it still remain Nothing? According to Heidegger, Nothing can come into the world in a way and be captured in human existence, so here we will argue that he did not leave Nothing as Nothing and carried it into Being.

This paper presents a discussion regarding the interpretation of Kant’s principle of publicity, which he views as the formal attribute of law. Although Kant has referred to this principle briefly in only one of his writings Perpetual Peace, the principle of publicity holds an important place on the intersection point of the legal, political and moral dimensions of Kantian philosophy. In this study, taking into account the Perpetual Peace other related writings of Kant, it will be argued that two different interpretations of the principle of publicity would possibly emerge. The first interpretation emerges out of the Perpetual Peace and it might be labelled as the ‘monological interpretation’, while the second is the ‘dialogical interpretation’ that might emerge from an alternative reading of his What is Enlightenment text. In the first interpretation, the principle of publicity is understood as an a priori thought procedure; whereas in the second interpretation the same principle refers to an actual public discussion. In the concluding part of the study, it will be argued that both the monological and the dialogical interpretations have a certain ground in Kantian philosophy.

The problem of beginning of philosophy, which only seems to concern history, is surely a historical matter, but also a subject belonging to philosophy itself, for the considerations about this problem necessarily reveals the nature of philosophy. There is a tradition that it is Thales of Miletus who started philosophy and was the first philosopher; however, philosophy is a product of a certain development process, by which it has acquired specific determinations and determined itself, and in this regard, it has required the labors of many philosophers. In the initial period of philosophy Greek philosophers made new beginnings and so served to the revealing of new aspects of philosophy. In this study, in order to emphasize that philosophy has not only one founder but founders, the contributions Greek philosophers from Thales to Aristotle made to the becoming of philosophy will be treated.

Happiness as a Subject of Ethics in Kant and Religiousness Based on Morality

History of ideas is full of theories which design human beings as moral agents. These theories usually posit how a general moral idea can be put into practice in human life and what sort of a happiness could be achieved through moral behavior. Kant’s theory has a very special place among all set of ideas. To Kant, being driven by natural tendencies and desires to achieve happiness is the wrong way to be counted as acting morally. Then asks Kant, what makes a human being a well-acting moral agent instead of a happy one. Against all the theories equalizing happiness, the highest good, with fulfilled natural tendencies and desires, he argues that ethical behavior must come first, and the happiness must come after as only a result of that. In this regard, happiness as a result of ethical behavior and a rational ideal is the only ethical choice to make one happy, because after this ethical effort which is rooted in independent rational laws of the agent turns a rational agent into a moral character and is always followed by an anticipation for utility and this anticipation is fulfilled, to Kant, by religion. In this way, Kant’s demand for his ethical theory to be called as a happiness theory is grounded, since the happiness is possible through rational laws which calls the moral agent on duty. In other words, happiness is possible only with a religiosity based on ethics. In this essay, I aim to, from the Kantian point of view, elaborate how happiness can be moralized or how one deserves happiness, and I shall describe Kantian religion based on ethics, where the ethical duty replaces divine order on the way to the highest good and taking a share from happiness.

Atomist Philosophy and Modern Science
abstract |

Nihayetinde modern bilimi nihai formuna ulaştıran düşünürün I. Newton olduğu kabul edildiğinde, Epikuros üzerinden alınan atomcu öğretinin, Newtoncu bilim tasarımını oldukça şekillendirdiği söylenebilir.
It is a matter of debate whether the Greek origin atomist philosophy had an effect or if it did, in what respects in the constitution process of modern science. For example, philosophers of science such as E. Burtt, A. Koyré, and T. Kuhn argue that atomic philosophy did not have an obvious influence on the constitution of modern science, while thinkers like Chalmers and D.C. Lindberg claimed that it had a certain level of influence. The aim of this study is to research the effect and importance of the Greek-origin atomist doctrine in the constitution process of modern science. For this purpose, first of all, the basic views and theses of the atomist doctrine of Greek origin were briefly presented, then the course of these views in the historical process was described, and finally, what kind of effect this doctrine had on thinkers such as P. Gassendi, R. Boyle and I. Newton in the modern period. has been revealed. Finally, when it is accepted that the thinker who brought modern science to its final form was Newton I, it can be said that the atomist doctrine taken from Epicurus formed the Newtonian science design.

İtki Olarak Bergson’un Süre Kavramı
abstract |

A renewed interest into the philosophy of Bergson in the last decades brings his central notion duration to the fore of lively discussions. This renewed interest certainly has its source in Deleuze’s Bergsonism, where he declared Bergson’s philosophy as an alternative to phenomenology that dominated the philosophical discussions throughout the 20th century. Deleuze’s attempt to put Bergson as an alternative to phenomenology was a protest against the phenomenological tradition, which denounced Bergson’s analysis of duration as it is first developed in Time and Free Will as remaining within the confines of psychological realism and reducing time to a flowing, fluid thing that resides in consciousness. In an attempt to contribute to the Deleuzian interpretation that defends Bergson’s notion of duration against its phenomenological criticisms, I argue in the present study that the notion of duration as developed by Bergson in Time and Free Will can be best interpreted in terms of a Leibnizian notion of force. Following Bergson’s criticism of reduction of time to a homogeneous medium in the work of Kant, I introduce Bergson’s analysis of duration as a drive that prolongs the past of consciousness into its present. In doing this I take a detour through Heidegger’s interpretation of Leibniz’s vis activa as drive.
Bunu yaparken Heidegger’in Leibniz’in vis activa kavramını itki olarak yorumlamasından yararlanıyorum.

Adaletin Anarşisi: Hesiodos’un Kaos’u, Anaksimender’in Apeiron’u ve Geometrik Düşünce
abstract |

This article examines Hesiod’s Chaos and Anaximander’s apeiron individually and in relation to each other through the frame of René Descartes’ notion of natural geometry and through bounds and limits in Euclid and Immanuel Kant. Thanks to this frame, it shows that, in his poetic vision, Hesiod saw in Chaos the act of bounding such that different things can appear while, in his speculative vision, Anaximander saw in the apeiron the self-limiting limit of bounded things, which is to say, time as distinct from the temporality of bounded things resulting from Chaos. Thus, together, Chaos and the apeiron present the spatiotemporal order of the world. Finally, delving further into Anaximander’s fragment shows that the justice (dike) ruling over all includes the apeiron as the time foundational to temporality, meaning justice is without foundation and therefore anarchic.

Different Scenes from the Artist’s Making: A Return from Aristotle to Plato on the Axis of “Tragedy”

This study aims to examine two structurally irreconcilable understandings of “tragedy” arising from the conceptualization of the act of “poiēsis” in two different ways, in particular for Aristotle and Plato. For this, the texts Peri Poiētikēs Tekhnēs and Politeia have been chosen as guides. By placing our discussion in the context of “mimēsis,” we try to open the place of these concepts in the understanding of “art” and “philosophy” of the two mentioned philosophers, by turning to the activity of “poiēsis” on the one hand and “poiētēs,” the performer of the activity of “poiēsis,” on the other. We are trying to deepen this essay through the notions of actor, action, passion, and spectator that appear in the context of tragedy. Thus, starting from the critical evaluations we have presented, we leave a hint that Plato, but not Aristotle, may have captured the original meaning of “art” as a “tekhnē (skill)” and “poiētikē (creativity).”

The Rejection of Eudaimonism in the Cyrenaic School

The different answers given by various schools to the question “how should we live?” in ancient Greek philosophy are largely characterized as eudaimonistic: The ultimate goal of human life is eudaimonia which comprises virtue at the heart. Considered among the minor Socratic schools and embracing a distinctive hedonistic moral philosophy, the Cyrenaic School seems to be outside of this general framework in the light of the testimonies about them from the scanty ancient sources. This paper aims to justify the claim that the School’s moral theory is incompatible with the traditional Greek eudaimonism, by means of the sceptical epistemology embraced by the School. To this aim, it is asserted that the School holds three basic views depended on their epistemology. Thereby, it is tried to attest that the School rejects the very assumptions behind the concept of the eudaimonism in line with these views.

“Borges’” Refutation of the Subject

This essay presents a close reading of Borges’s “A New Refutation of Time” published in his essay collection Other Inquisitions, in 1952. The original article undermines the notion of subject and that of time through the idea of the identity of different moments, whilst this work readdresses the discussion by bringing the subject and thus the writer into focus in a way entirely faithful to the original argument. Just as in the case of the original paper, the discussion is accompanied by the ideas of Berkeley and Hume. The motivation behind readdressing these ideas is not to refute Borges’s ideas or to support them with new ones; rather, the motivation can be understood as a writing performance where the theoretical structure influencing the whole literature of Borges, which unites the agents of the act of writing in the act of writing by undermining the notion of subject, is put forward.

Mourning and Melancholia, the text written by Freud during the First World War and the critical rereading of this text by Derrida and Butler constitute the main axis of this article. Initially, the Freudian definition of mourning and melancholy, their distinctive features, their points of convergence and divergence, the relationship between so-called normal mourning and so-called pathological melancholy will be presented to show the ambiguity of their limits and their opposition. Secondly, one of the distinctive features of Freudian melancholy that is the transformation of the loss of the other into the loss of the self will be taken up and problematized in dialogue with Butler to bring out the place of the other as well as of its loss in the constitution of the self. This discussion makes it possible to expose how the loss of the other, which moves us from the question of detachment to that of attachment, reveals the non-identity of the self, altered by the other. The third part of this article, problematizing the finality of mourning, which is the substitution of the other, focuses on Derrida's thought that renew the approach to mourning and melancholy by introducing the concepts of “introjection” and “incorporation”. Derrida's ethic of mourning, which aims to avoid the assimilation of the other to the same, is based on a double bind between the possibility and the impossibility of mourning. The article concludes with a brief review of the relationship between identity and alterity revealed by different modalities of loss to respond differently to the question: How to return to life after the experience of the other's death?

Today, when the number of environmental problems is multiplying and the science of biology is advancing by leaps and bounds, the analysis of the concept of organism is useful for both understanding our nature, which includes our interactions with other living entities, and understanding developments in the contemporary biology. This paper examines the concept of organism especially through organism-environment interaction and emphasizes its importance in contemporary biology, where the concept of organism has gained more importance—particularly with the transition from Modern Synthesis to Extended Evolutionary Synthesis. The development of this concept, which has roots in the organism-centred biology of the early twentieth century, has become even more dynamic with advancements in biology in recent decades (especially in the sub-fields of developmental biology, systems biology, and ecology). Examining the development of this concept is valuable not only for philosophy of biology but also for re-conceiving ourselves as living entities—that is, organisms—and, consequently, re-thinking our interactions with our environment (both abiotic and biotic).

Pandemiyi Olumlamak ya da Hayata Yüz Çevirmek: Nietzscheci Bir Değerlendirme

This paper is a reflection on the impacts of the Coronavirus pandemic on social life and draws on Nietzsche’s views on pessimism, will to power and affirmation. The question that lies at its centre is what it means to experience the pandemic with an affirmative or a life-negating attitude. It aims to open up a space for discussion for how the pandemic actually is or can possibly be experienced affirmatively. In order to do so, first of all it provides an outline of Nietzsche’s analysis of the ancient Greek culture and the Greek myth of the wisdom of Silenus and secondly Nietzsche’s critique of the ascetic ideal. Lastly, putting the two topics side by side, it explores reactions towards the current pandemic on a scale of economy ranging from preservation to enhancement.

At first glance, what scientific progress means seems to be a quickly answered question. It is not easy to think of the sciences without progress; sciences and the notion of progress seem identical in general. Describing the nature of scientific progress is an important task that will have practical and theoretical consequences. The approach, which argues that the background on which sciences are based does not have a historical or cultural character following the positivist interpretation, accepts sciences as testing the validity of observation and experiment data to a large extent. On the other hand, the tendency that emphasizes that the complex functioning of the history of science has an indelible mark on scientific theories prefers to build sciences on a historical and social basis. How both major approaches ground the idea of scientific progress profoundly affects both our understanding of the nature of scientific knowledge and the way we do science. This paper aims to evaluate scientific progress based on the views of prominent philosophers of science in the twentieth century.

abstract |

It is one of the main allegations impelled by feminist theorists against Kant's philosophy that the subject Kant placed at the base of his understanding of rationality is masculine, a Westerner and belongs to upper/middle class. In fact, there is considerable supporting evidence to promote this claim for mainstream Western philosophy in general and Kant's philosophy in particular. On the other hand, while reckoning with the history of philosophy, and examining whether it is possible to break away from philosophical concepts and categories or not, is another matter of discussion. In this article, I try to focus on various possibilities that can reconcile Kant's philosophy with the demands of liberal feminism and an inclusive democratic participation principle. It is important that to discuss whether it is possible to make a new reading that can be reconciled with feminist demands by ignoring the misogynistic discourses in Kant's works, especially starting from the concepts of autonomy and personality. Today, many factors like traditions, prejudices, oppressive forms of government, etc. prevent women from taking part in public life as free agents and autonomously, and from being considered as “subjects with the status of rights”. Therefore, I argue that Kant's concepts such as autonomy, becoming a person and having the conditions for free action, do have something in common with feminist demands.

At the Intersection of Sexism and Speciesism: Nonhuman Animals’ Right to Live as a Feminist Issue

This article argues that feminism has to defend the right to live freely and autonomously for nonhuman animals in general, and for farm animals in particular. Production processes of animal products involve not only serial production and consumption of the bodies of farm animals for the pleasure and profit of humans, but also infliction of constant pain throughout their lives that arises from being forced to live under adverse conditions. Moreover, present practices subject female nonhuman animals to extra torment to be able to profit from their biological reproductive power, especially in dairy and egg industries. Four arguments are proposed to support this main thesis by drawing from the works of writers such as bell hooks and Carol J. Adams. Also, a possible criticism that challenges the notion of defining sex by biological traits is discussed and a response inspired by Wittgensteinian thought is developed with the intention to demonstrate that although we define the sex of nonhuman animals according to their biological traits, this does not have to be the sole or sufficient criterion for defining femaleness in general.

The Problem of Individuation: Aristotle’s Principle of Individuation and Identity
abstract |

Individuation investigates what is the principle that makes things individual and distinguishes them from others. Although the individual is a contemporary notion, it has been used in the sense of entity and individuation has been discussed together with the problem of identity since middle ages philosophers. In this article, while investigating Aristotle’s approach to the individuation problem, we will first discuss matter theory that generally accepted. Defending matter as a principle of individuatian can be clarified by its divisibility or identity. But divisibility itself makes individuation impossible and contradicts Aristotle’s viwes. The identity of matter needs a content because it is not clear enough; here, we will include Leibniz’s principle of identity of indiscernibles into the discussion, and we will designate this content as the unshareable of matter. However, we encounter the problem of becoming, which we will also refer the example of the Thesus ship. On the other hand, stating Aristotle’s individuation principle as form means defending individual forms; it is not clear what is meant by individual forms therefore we will offer accidental properties for individuation. Though, Lebniz and Aristotle seem impossible to agree on this issue and for Aristotle, individuation with accidental properties is unacceptable; individuation by non-essential properties means that things are not individual by nature. Then, pointing out the opinion of individuation with position through Aristotle, we will discuss that matter in the meaning of position is the principle of individution. Finally, we will indicate that individuation by position requires absolute space, and we will refer to Black’s thought experiment, which logically invalidates Leibniz’s the principle of identity of indiscernibles.

Ockhamist solutions concerning the problem of divine foreknowledge and free will had an important place between 1960’s and 1990’s in contemporary analytic philosophy of religion circles. In this work, after briefly presenting William of Ockham’s (1287-1347) views on future contingent propositions and on the problem of divine foreknowledge and free will, Ockhamist solutions to the problem of divine foreknowledge and free will in the contemporary analytic philosophy of religion and contentions about them will be discussed. Within this framework, it will be demonstrated that Ockhamist solutions fail to reconcile divine foreknowledge and human free will. Moreover, metaphysical problem encountered by the view on the future contingents which is presupposed by Ockhamist solutions will be presented, and it will be emphasized that this problem poses a challenge to any attempt to reconcile divine foreknowledge and free will.
